Armistice Day in Ypres Group Tours: Sat 10th to Mon 12th November 2018
Day One (Outward): Local pick-up
to Dover. Ferry to Calais. Onward travel to your accommodation in Diksmuide or Ostend (B&B for two nights). Check-in & evening free. (Note: This itinerary can be adapted for groups wishing to travel via P&O North Sea Ferries sailing overnight from Hull. Please ask our staff for details).
Day Two (Remembrance): Depart after breakfast. The programme of events will include:
Introduction to the Ypres Salient: The high ground at Hooge.
Special morning Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Please note
that details for all commemorative events taking place are yet to be announced but attendance will, no doubt, be subject to security arrangements, crowd control issues & traffic restrictions. We will inform group organisers as & when more information becomes available.
Lunch-time in Ypres.
Afternoon battlefield tour of the Ypres Salient. Provisional itinerary chosen from the following selected locations: Langemark German Cemetery (role of the British Expeditionary Force, formation of the Salient & the fate of the German student battalions); Pilckem Ridge (first use of gas); Essex Farm (medics & casualty evacuation); the Menin Road & Helffire Corner (logistics).
Requested personal cemetery visits.
Free time in the early evening before attending the evening Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at 8.00 pm.
Late return to hotel.
Day Three (Return): Depart after breakfast for a visit to the Passchendale battlefeld & Tyne Cot Cemetery & Memorial to the Missing. Tyne Cot is the largest British War Cemetery in the world with almost 12,000 casualties. The memorial Panels list a further 35,000 names of the Missing. Depart for Calais & ferry crossing to Dover. Return to your local drop-off point.
